CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CODES,Sensors, OBD-II scan tool,Engine Light Diagnosis

Modern engines are equipped with sensors that provide information to the vehicle's computer. These sensors monitor the fuel-air mixture, incoming air temperature, wheel speed, and manifold pressure. Subsequently, they relay this data to the vehicle's computer, which then determines the appropriate actions to take.

Just like any other component, sensors can deteriorate, corrode, or get dirty. This can cause the computer to lose its functionality and activate the troublesome check engine light. You can have an Al-Rafay Auto Parts Team Member check your OBD codes at our nearby store for you.

If sensors malfunction, your engine's fuel efficiency and performance may be compromised. In extreme cases, engine failure can occur. Therefore, it is advisable to promptly replace worn automotive sensors.

Below are some common sensors found in vehicles:

  • The idle air control valve (IAC) regulates the air intake into the engine during idle. Usually situated on the throttle body, it aids in the engine's warm-up process, similar to a carburetor choke.

  • The manifold absolute pressure sensor (MAP) detects air pressure variations entering the engine. The computer adjusts fuel and spark delivery based on these variations.

  • The intake air temperature sensor (IAT) assists the computer in controlling exhaust gas recirculation for cleaner emissions. Typically located in the air cleaner housing.

  • The O2 sensor, positioned in the exhaust stream, monitors exhaust gas content. It plays a crucial role in emissions control, helping the engine computer calculate fuel mixture and delivery. A failing O2 sensor can lead to a rich-running condition and black smoke from the tailpipe.

  • The mass air flow (MAF) sensor monitors air volume and density entering the engine. It collaborates with the O2 sensor to calculate fuel delivery, with the O2 sensor monitoring gases on the exhaust end.

  • The crank position sensor tracks the crankshaft's rotational speed to adjust fuel mixture and spark advance. Its location may vary, such as on the flywheel, main crank pulley, camshaft, or crank. Engine failure to start may result from a faulty crank position sensor.

  • Anti-lock brake systems (ABS) function by detecting and comparing wheel rotation speeds. If unequal speeds are detected, the ABS computer prevents wheel lock by adjusting braking pressure through a network of valves and pumps.

A flashing check engine light signals a potentially severe problem affecting your vehicle's ignition, fuel, or emission systems. When the check engine light is on or flashing, it is essential to visit Our Workshop Al-Rafay Auto Repair for a car diagnostic. Our skilled auto service professionals will investigate the error code and troubleshoot the issue. Delaying a diagnostic or necessary engine repair can lead to escalating problems and costs.

When you bring your vehicle to Al-Rafay Auto Repair, our experienced professionals will conduct onboard diagnostics to determine the cause of the check engine light. While the exact reason for a check engine light can only be determined through a diagnostic, potential causes of a steady or flashing light include:

  • Failing oxygen sensor

  • Loose gas cap

  • Bad spark plug/ignition coil

  • Bad spark plug wires

  • Issues with the catalytic converter

  • Malfunctioning mass air flow sensor

  • Engine vacuum leak

  • EGR valve problem

  • Excessive fuel consumption or emission of pollutants

It is normal for the check engine light to briefly illuminate when starting the car and then turn off as the system tests its circuits.

STEADY VS. FLASHING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT

A steady check engine light indicates an issue that is not yet critical, but it still requires attention to prevent costly repairs. A diagnostic is necessary even if the light is not flashing.

WHY DOES MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COME ON WHEN I START MY CAR?

It is a common occurrence for the check engine light to briefly illuminate when starting the vehicle as part of the system's circuit testing.
